Never, on a healthy system. Refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop and does not get consumed like fuel. A system needing yearly top offs has a leak, and each recharge rents time instead of fixing anything. Leak detection finds the hole once, and the charge stays put afterward.
Cycling wins for most homes: set the temperature higher when away and recover before arrival. A smart schedule automates it. The exception is high humidity stretches, where longer steady runs help the system wring moisture. Oversized equipment complicates the math, which is a sizing conversation worth having.
Smart thermostats assume ducted single stage systems, and they stumble on heat pumps, multi stage equipment, and steam boilers without correct configuration. Aggressive setback schedules also fight heat pump economics. Setup matched to your equipment fixes most of it, and some systems run best on their own brand controls.
Fans cool people, never rooms, by moving air across skin. Running them in occupied rooms lets the thermostat sit 2 to 3 degrees higher at equal comfort, which trims real money. Running them in empty rooms adds motor heat and saves nothing. Occupancy is the whole trick.
Massachusetts requires SEER2 13.4 at minimum, and the value zone for our climate sits around 15 to 17 for most homes. Higher ratings pay back slowly in a short cooling season unless rebates close the gap. Sizing and installation quality move your bills more than the last SEER2 point.
