Plan Before an Emergency
A boiler or furnace failure during winter can force a rushed decision. Planning before an emergency gives you time to understand the design, compare incentive pathways and prepare the home. Conversion may also add air conditioning, reduce dependence on oil or gas and address aging equipment.
If repairing the existing system still makes sense, we will explain that option. Repairing today may provide the time needed to design a conversion properly.
Assessment and Design
Most 617 installation assessments take approximately 90 minutes. We do not begin with a predetermined equipment package. We review the existing heating system, conditioned space, insulation and air-sealing history, electrical service, available installation areas and how heating currently reaches the rooms.

When ductwork is involved, duct design is completed unless there is a documented reason it is not required.

You receive one recommendation. A second option is provided only when there is a legitimate design reason or you request one.
Modern cold-climate heat pumps can provide heating during a Massachusetts winter and cooling during summer. Equipment capability alone does not determine whether a conversion will work: the system must fit the calculated load, outdoor design conditions, layout, electrical capacity and intended operating strategy.
Gas and Oil, One Conversion Practice
The design process is shared. The work needed to retire or retain the existing fuel system is not.
Existing fuel
The scope may include the boiler or furnace, fuel lines, oil tank, domestic hot water and existing distribution. The homeowner may choose a whole-home conversion that disables oil space heating or a partial-home design that retains oil as controlled backup; that choice affects controls, scope and Mass Save eligibility. 617 HVAC coordinates qualifying plumbing, fuel-system work and aboveground tank removal or decommissioning through 617 Flow. Underground tanks require a qualified excavation and environmental contractor because the work may involve soil testing, leakage and environmental requirements outside our direct scope.
Existing fuel
A gas conversion may replace the boiler or furnace completely or retain it as controlled backup under a partial-home design. Converting the heating system does not automatically eliminate the gas account: water heating, cooking, fireplaces and other connected equipment must be considered before service is disconnected. When gas heat remains as backup, 617 installs the Mass Save-approved integrated controls required for the applicable zones and tests the heat pump, backup system and control sequence before handoff.
From Assessment to Handoff
Most installations take approximately one to two weeks, depending on the design, existing conditions and related work.

Complete the load calculation, select equipment and define the whole-home or partial-home operating strategy.

Provide one detailed recommendation identifying the equipment, layout, existing-system plan, electrical and plumbing work, controls, permits, inspections, warranties, incentive assumptions, commissioning requirements and complete project pricing.

617 HVAC handles the heat-pump installation and coordinates 617 Flow for included plumbing, fuel, hot-water or aboveground oil-tank work.

Obtain permits, coordinate required inspections and complete the approved scope. Permit and inspection costs are included in the quoted project price. Normal adjustments within the approved scope do not change the price; it changes only for homeowner-selected upgrades or additional work beyond the original scope.
Mass Save Incentives | 2026
For 2026, Mass Save lists several residential air-source heat-pump incentive pathways. Eligibility depends on existing fuel, utility sponsor, equipment, weatherization, building type, installation date and documentation. Programs change; 617 helps identify the applicable pathway but does not control or guarantee rebate approval or payment.

$2,650 per ton, up to $8,500, for qualifying projects where heat pumps become the sole source of space heating.

$1,125 per ton, up to $8,500, for qualifying projects that retain backup heat or serve part of the home.

A properly designed cold-climate heat pump can provide whole-home heating. The recommendation depends on the home's calculated load, electrical capacity, distribution and equipment performance.
Yes, under a partial-home design. Approved integrated controls may be required. Keeping backup makes the project ineligible for the Whole-Home rebate but may open eligibility for the partial-home-only $500 sizing and $500 weatherization bonuses.
It may mean the heat pump serves part of the house. It can also mean the heat pump serves the entire house while oil or gas remains available as backup.
Not always. Whole-home Mass Save projects require existing space heating to be removed or disabled. Partial-home projects may retain it with required controls.

Choose the operating strategy
Mass Save program categories
Heat pumps serve 100% of conditioned space and become the sole source of space heating. Existing oil or gas space heating must be removed or disabled.
The heat pump may serve part of the house, or the entire house while oil or gas remains available as controlled backup.
617 generally prefers retaining controlled backup when it makes technical and practical sense. Keeping backup changes the rebate pathway, but also opens incentives unavailable to whole-home projects: up to $1,000 through the partial-home-only sizing and weatherization bonuses. We explain the resilience benefit, incentive difference and operating requirements before recommending whether the existing system should remain, be disabled or be removed.

Installation is not complete when the equipment turns on. We verify operation, airflow and static pressure where applicable, temperature delivery, thermostat response, controls, drainage and backup-system sequencing.

Documented Handoff
Operating instructions, equipment documents, warranty information, registration, project photos and a walkthrough.
Ongoing Record
The conversion becomes part of the 617 Home Wellness record for filters, drainage, controls, seasonal performance and backup operation.

A Real Cambridge Conversion
During the renovation of his own Cambridge home, the owner of 617 HVAC faced the same conversion decision.
The owner's Cambridge home had no central air. Conventional ductwork would have required unwanted soffits, while visible ductless units were not preferred.
617 HVAC designed and installed a Unico heat-pump system. Its small ductwork fit the available spaces and supplied heating and air conditioning without conventional ducts throughout the house.
The natural-gas system remains available as backup. It was the right design for this home, and the owner's firsthand assessment is that the system has not disappointed.
617 Flow handles qualifying aboveground oil-tank removal or decommissioning. Underground tanks require a qualified excavation and environmental contractor.
Qualifying new whole-home and partial-home installations currently include a heat-pump water heater with standard installation. Replacement projects and work beyond standard installation are excluded.
Cost depends on the home, equipment, distribution, electrical work, plumbing and existing-system work. Written pricing is provided after assessment and design.
