Ductwork Cleaning | Greater Boston
Dust keeps coming back. Let’s find out what your ducts are holding.
617 HVAC provides residential ductwork cleaning for homeowners across Greater Boston and surrounding Eastern Massachusetts communities. Air duct cleaning is worth doing when specific conditions appear, not on a calendar. We inspect the duct system first, measure the air and confirm the need before you spend a dollar. Every HVAC duct cleaning runs under HEPA-filtered containment with whole-system source removal. Before and after readings verify the result and the cleaning quote reaches you in writing before work begins.
When Duct Cleaning Is Worth It
Air ducts need cleaning when specific conditions appear in the home, not on a fixed calendar schedule. The EPA recommends air duct cleaning on an as-needed basis rather than a yearly routine. Visible mold, pest activity, heavy debris and post-construction dust are the conditions that justify the work. A healthy duct system earns a straight answer: keep your money.
01
Duct cleaning is justified by four conditions: visible mold inside ductwork, rodent or insect activity, heavy debris blowing from supply registers and post-construction dust. Post-construction dust is the condition we see most across Greater Boston.
02
Greater Boston ductwork collects debris faster than newer construction. Renovation dust in open returns, pre-war housing, basement moisture, pets and six-month heating seasons all load the duct system ahead of schedule.
03
A light dust film near registers is normal and does not justify whole-system duct cleaning. Our technicians earn nothing by selling a cleaning your ducts do not need, so the honest answer costs you nothing.
Duct cleaning frequency follows conditions, not the calendar. Industry guidance points to every three to five years at most and only when the system shows the need.
Why 617 HVAC
617 HVAC measures the air before the cleaning, cleans under sealed containment and verifies the improvement afterward. Plenty of companies vacuum and leave. We document the baseline, show the work on video and return to the numbers after the job.
Baseline indoor air quality readings document the starting condition. Post-cleaning readings prove the change in numbers you can read and keep yourself.
Source removal dislodges debris with agitation tools while negative pressure pulls the material into HEPA-filtered collection. Wiping visible registers is not a cleaning.
Sealed access points and HEPA filtration keep dislodged debris inside our equipment instead of inside your rooms, floors and furniture.
Interior video shows the ductwork before we start and after we finish. The evidence joins your system’s documented service history.
617 HVAC technicians are paid for doing the job right, not on commission. Nobody in your basement profits from finding a bigger problem.
A follow-up visit after the first month confirms airflow, balance and indoor air quality held at the level the verification readings recorded.
How We Work
Ductwork cleaning at 617 HVAC moves through six stages: contact, inspection, containment, source removal, verification and follow-up. The cleaning quote arrives in writing after the inspection, once we know your duct system’s size, layout and condition.
01
Describe the symptoms: dust that returns after wiping, musty smells from vents, a recent renovation or allergies that worsen indoors. We respond within 24 hours.
02
A trained technician inspects accessible ductwork and records baseline indoor air quality readings. A borescope ductwork video inspection documents interior conditions when a closer look is needed.
03
We seal register openings, connect HEPA-filtered collection equipment and place the duct system under negative pressure. Dislodged debris gets one exit path: our equipment.
04
Agitation tools work through supply runs, return runs, trunk lines and the plenum while the vacuum pulls debris out. Most air duct cleanings take a few hours, not days.

Air duct cleaning sits inside a sequence: inspect, test when findings call for testing, clean, then protect the result. Moisture staining or suspect growth found during inspection sends the job to HVAC mold testing before duct cleaning. Containment then matches what the laboratory confirms. Clean air stays clean with the right indoor air quality systems for Greater Boston homes.

Laboratory analysis comes first when the inspection shows moisture or suspect growth. Independent mold testing is $225.

Filtration, humidity control and ventilation keep the air clean after cleaning.
View IAQ →The price depends on duct system size, vent count, layout, access and the contamination level the inspection finds. We provide the cleaning quote in writing after the inspection. Contact our team or request an estimate to schedule the first visit.
An adult needs to let us in and walk the system with us at the start. You’re free to work from home or step out afterward; we walk you through the findings at the end.
Clear a few feet around registers, the air handler and the basement or attic access. We handle the rest, including floor protection along the work path.
Older Greater Boston homes sometimes carry asbestos-wrapped ductwork. We assess the wrapping during the inspection and refer disturbance work to a licensed abatement contractor before cleaning proceeds.

We repeat the readings in the locations where the baseline was taken and photograph the cleaned interiors. You see both sets side by side.

We return after the first month of normal operation to confirm the duct system is holding clean, balanced and quiet.

A Newton condominium complex reached out after renovation work wrapped up. Residents kept finding fine dust on surfaces they had wiped down days earlier.
The HVAC system ran during construction with open returns. Drywall and finish dust pulled into the ductwork and recirculated every time the system cycled.
Our inspection and baseline readings documented heavy construction debris through the supply and return runs. The duct system was redistributing the job site into finished homes.
We cleaned the full system under HEPA-filtered containment, sealed the access points and repeated the readings once the work finished. The numbers confirmed the improvement.
Post-construction duct cleaning belongs at the end of every renovation that ran the HVAC system. 617 HVAC verifies the air, not the promise.

Yes. Flexible duct runs take gentler agitation and controlled vacuum pressure than rigid metal. The inspection tells us which sections need which approach and the method adjusts room by room.
Dryer vent runs are a separate system from HVAC ductwork. Mention the dryer when you schedule and we confirm the scope for your home in the written quote.
We stop, document the finding on video and recommend laboratory testing before anything else is disturbed. Cleaning proceeds once the results define the right containment for the job.
No, not by default. The EPA cautions against routine chemical biocides inside residential ductwork. Source removal does the work; anything beyond source removal gets discussed with you first.
Yes. Condominiums, two-families and triple-deckers make up much of Greater Boston’s housing stock. Shared duct systems get scoped during the inspection so responsibility lines stay clear for every owner.
Wait until every trade has finished and the dust-producing work is done. Cleaning too early means paying twice; post-construction duct cleaning belongs at the final step of the project.
